Short, plain-language explainers to help you understand what your gold is and what it's worth.
How to find your karat (hallmark markings)
Most gold is stamped with a tiny number that tells you its purity. Look on the clasp, inside a ring band, or on the back of a pendant:
| Marking | Karat | Purity |
|---|---|---|
| 375 | 9K | 37.5% |
| 417 | 10K | 41.7% |
| 585 | 14K | 58.5% |
| 750 | 18K | 75.0% |
| 916 | 22K | 91.6% |
| 999 | 24K | 99.9% |
Don't see a stamp? Use the "I don't know my karat" flow in any calculator, or estimate with a custom purity.
Selling scrap gold
Buyers pay for the pure gold content, minus a margin for refining and risk — typically 70–90% of spot. Weigh your items, group by karat, and use the scrap gold calculator to set expectations before you visit a buyer.
